Why should a 16 yr old be able to get an abortion, which is a medical procedure, without her parents' consent if she is unable by law to consent to sex?
A 16 yr old cannot even get stitches in the ER without parents' consent. Tell me why you think an abortion is ok but sex (consent) is not. I'm not against the abortion idea, I just don't like the mixed message that our society & legal system is putting out there. If an 18 yr old guy can go to jail for sex with a 17 yr old girl (when it is consentual) shouldn't the 17 yr old girl be treated as a law breaker also?

Verde, where you got the idea I was young is beyond me, but thanks anyway. Just because I'm not 16 doesn't mean I don't know what is going on in the world.

I agree with you. I, too, disagree with the mixed message. That's why I don't believe in "consent" laws based on artificial age limits. The age of 16 (or 17, 18, 19, 21, etc.) is chosen because someone somewhere was able to convince the majority of the electorate that the majority of folks that aege are incapable of being trusted to make an intelligent deicision regarding whatever the issue is. To begin with the writings of our Founders make it plain that they had little use for true Democracy and this is why. For as long as there is ONE person of that age; 16, 17... whatever... capable of making a mature and intelligent decision on whatever the issue at hand might be then such laws restrict the freedom of that person and, thereby, punish the innocent along with the (possibly... potentially) guilty.
Moreover young folks can't learn to make decisions if all their potentially disasterous decisions are taking from them. Our society artificially extends the concept of adolescence to an absurd extreme today and we have extended it farther than any other culture in history. We are suffering because of it... suffering citizens who, by the time they are taking their place in the adult world, have so little real ability to think for themselves that they, increasingly, hail to the clarion call of socialism and all it's hollow promises.
Ultimately, of course, that's the reason many people in power support such draconian measures. It's so much easier to promote socialism among frightened and insecure eternal adolescents.

A good point but consider this situation. Though I understand this does not happen every day it does happen. You're sixteen and you get raped but you were raised in a very strict christian family who oppose abortions. You ask your parents for permission to have an abortion and your parents say no. Well now you're sixteen and pregnant you obviously can not postpone your pregnancy two years to have an abortion. Consider if your parents can barely provide for you and now you have a baby coming in this world with not even a high school degree. How will you support your baby? How will you buy it a crib with little to no support from your parents? How will you raise a baby and have a full time job all at the same time?
Having stitches is different from having an abortion because having stitches affects only you while having an abortion affects a new baby. If you do not have the means to provide for a baby mentally or monetarily then you should not have the baby. If you will die or have serious health problems as a result of having the baby then you should not have the baby. If you have mental health problems then you should not have the baby (mental health problems as in serious depression where you will turn into the mother, for example, from "A Child Called It")

Nice question. The only answer I can think of, is that faced with the reality of having a child, the 16 year old 'suddenly' grows up, perhaps understands that she made a mistake, and also understands that actually having the baby is ANOTHER mistake, so she gets the abortion. Anyway, if most people took the time to think things out like you do, America would be a much better place.

Yeah...I agree...the Government is so messed up these days...the age of consent where I live is 16 but it varies. I don't think that abortion is ever OK except for in the case of a minor being raped and a parents consent for under-18 should always be required.

I agree with you 100%.
The age of consent should be 18 for everything! If your old enough to get drafted for a war, old enough to buy cigarettes.....then you shouldn't be able to get an abortion until your 18 without your parents consent.

I can tell you are young, but you posed an excellent question. Since you are preaching to the choir with me, I'll let it go this time and see your other answers. Don't let their spin sway you though.
