It is the threat not the worship. Many Koreans knows they are in bad shape. But the Kim Jong II is controlling the miltary. The dictators have spent much money in the miltary. Those soldiers are getting paid and that is their employment.
With the military support, the dictator put down any opposition voices. There is no chance the poor civilians can do anything.
This Kim Jong II is worse than Taliban and Sadaam. For those agfanistian and iraqi's, they uses the islam as the governing rules. The north Korean were forced to "worship" this dictator.
I hope one day China and South Korea will liberate the North Korea and united the peninsula.
US and UN can not do it because China and russia may interven as an invasion from the west.
But if China and South Korea initiate the revolution, there is a chance for the good days for the poor north Korean.

Kim Jong Il's hooligan squads go to some lengths to keep the populace in the dark. Radios are strictly controlled to receive only the official stations. There is no freedom of the press. No satellite dishes, or free Internet access. I guess you could call it brainwashing.

I think they realize that their country is in desperate straights, especially when they don't have enough to eat. If anyone is fed a steady diet of propaganda they are going to believe a least some of it. The "dear leader" loyalists support the status-quo because it brings them perks, the others either keep their mouths shut in the interests of survival, or are already dead/imprisoned. After all; rice rations are based on political loyalty, so a lot of of the people who might organize resistance have already died of starvation or slipped into China.

He is taking a stand that thousands of leaders have taken before him. When your country is poor, starving, and ripe for overthrow of the government...all you need to do is pick a fight. Starting a conflict against the US and the UN unites his people around him. The best way to unite a poverty stricken country is to blame it on other people, and they will ralley around you. I am not saying I agree with that tactic, but it definitely works.
