I know nothing about guitars. I need help selecting one for my 16 year old son. All i know is that he wants an electric one. So I would like to know about the diffrent kinds and what would be best for my son. I know he wants to learn to play Casting Crowns, Thousand Foot Krutch, Reliant K, and Queen songs If that helps any. I would also like help finding ways for him to learn how to play.

go to a music store and ask for a beginner guitar
when i first started i bought a beginners kit for 200 (canadian) at Tom Lee Music
it was a Fender Squire with a 15 watt amp, picks, cable, strap, self learning book included.
After a year or so, I was still interested in playing so I bought myself a 1000 dollar jackson.

lessons will teach him or a good self teach method.

to choose go to like sam ash or guitar center. take the guitar and hold it up to see if the neck is straight. if it is bent either forwards or backwards dont choose that one. if its warped then it can affect the quality of the instrament, music and tuning. dont get a warped one.

besides the straight neck make sure his hand fits it comfortably. if the neck is too big or small he wont be able the play comfortably.

start with something simple for him, a squire strat is good and go better later.

dont forget to check the neck whatever you do. thats very important.

Don't ask at the music store. The best one will always be the most expensive. If he doesn't know how to play yet, you dont want a real expensive one, but you also don't want the cheapest one either cause they're no good. go for the middle of the line.

Buy him the cheapest one you can find.....possibly from a Pawn Shop. The reason is that by the age of 17, he'll have given up and the guitar will sit in a corner. Why waste the money.

Get him an acoustic to learn with.....an electric he will just beat and crank the volume and think he is good.

If he can play the acoustic, next year go electric. For the acoustic, don't really cheap out. Low quality cheap guitars just discourage a new player. They are hard to tune, harmonics are off and you will destroy your fingers trying to play.

Remember, you gotta walk before you can run.

Ask the guitarist of a local band. He/she might be selling a used one.

You really should go to a guitar store and talk to an expert.

Well, you should get a kind that he would be able to play with ease, and one that sounds great to him. You should get a teacher to teach him to play also.
