The best way to do that is to NOT use fabric softener. Fabric softener can make them resistant to water.

100% cotton towels or microfiber towels are the 2 most absorbent kinds, but if you use any type of fabric softener you will destroy the absortion capability of the towels until it is completely washed out. Also, one other area that could be affecting the absorbency of cotton towels would be if you only dry them on a line. Cotton fibers are composed of anhydrous molecules, that means that water will bond strongly to the molecular structure, In order to break those Hydrogen bonds and thoroughly dry cotton you must heat it to a relatively high temperature. A dryer can attain high enough temps but a clothes line cannot unless you live in the middle of death valley.

It's all about absorption and surface area. Throw them around Drive over them fluff them up Break down the rigidness of the fabric fibres on the tiny fabric loops of the terry[?]-towelling to create more surface area. Alternatively use your old towels.

new towels have a coating on them-it will wash out over a few washings-and you should NEVER use fabric softener on towels. it prevents them from absorbing water.

If the towels are not pure cotton, they will never dry well. I have made that mistake too.
