To set up a form of government that would protect commerce. This government was to be divided up into three groups; Legislative; Judaical and Executive. The common states were feuding over each of their own states rights in dealing with commerce. The Bill of Rights (the 1st 10 amendments) were added later at the peoples request. The Bill of Rights is a limitation on the government, even though, today, most think that the government gave them these, they did not.

Limited government. The US is still the only government whose founding and ruling document espouses the principal that all rights belong to the people and only lent to the government in order to establish stability. The Constitution is the only such document that basically tells the government what few rights it has. Most governments say they have all rights and then grant a few rights to the people. It is sad that more people do not understand this principle and have let our rights be eroded. And contrary to popular belief the worst of this is not recent but happened int 1920's and 30's.

The basic principles were the articles. Which were the establishment of a three branched system of government with checks and balances to prevent tyranny.
The Bill of Rights is secondary to that.

To live a life from hassle, intimidation, coercion, threats, harassment. Not to be hunted stalked and "Targeted" by the government. Never to be on a total surveillence grid watching us
at all times by military.
"Freedom of True Speech" not dumb speech.
Freedom from being torture by our government.
Freedom from attempted murder by spooks.
Freedom from military being used againist the citizens.
Freedom from crooks robbing our treasury.
Freedom from a group of eliteist stealing our country.
Freedom from Council of foregin relations running our government.
