The Windows firewall does not filter communications coming from your computer. That means if you are infected with a virus, it can communicate with its masters. You don't want that. Install Sygate Personal Firewall or Comodo Firewall (free version) instead. Zone Alarm can be hacked easily. Use also a router.

YES. If you must use Windows Firewall, then turn your computer off and keep it off. For a cheap way out go for Zone labs Zone alarm Free Edition Firewall. A better choice and also not free is Trend Micro PC-Cillin all in one security center, use it in conjunction with Zone alarm and you will be very nicely protected. As for using more than one firewall, you can use as many firewalls as you want, as long as they are configured correctly, I currently am running three on my Windows box, 2 locally (Trend Micro and Zone alarm), I also have a Linux firewall running on my wireless access point. Configuration is the key.

I would uninstall any 3rd firewall and download zonealarm free edition from www.zonelabs.com If you have DSL or cable internet access I would get a hardware firewall like alpiha sheld. you can goto www.alphashield.com/products/htm.

You only need on software firewall and one hardware firewall you well have 2 levels of firewall. and to test them out goto www.grc.com shieldup.

Zone Alarm is crap and Windows firewall only blocks incoming packets. Every other firewall filters both incoming and outgoing packets.

Comodo is both free and an excellent choice:

Passes firewall leaktests that the others can't.

I prefer ZoneAlarm free because it controls Internet access to executable program files better than Microsoft's firewall.

You only need one firewall. More than one will cause them to interfere with each other.

I had Norton's and WindowXP's. I have disabled Norton's.
