A "national holiday" means the federal government (and usually local ones, too) are closed for the day; this is not true of Valentine's day, so your question is moot.

I don't see why not. It's a more popular holiday than others. Plus, it's a chance for moms to go out to eat, and for some, that's a rarity!
For some couples that stay busy most of the time, it's the one day that they get to be together in a romantic atmosphere. Why take that away? :)

There's no need for a holiday just to treat your spouse or show your spouse how much you like them. Show it everyday. I'm also against Christmas as a gift-exchanging holiday. THe commericialism of holidays is ridiculous.

If I can't get off work then I really don't celebrate it as a holiday. As far as I'm concerned its right there with up there with St. Patricks, Columbus, President's Day. Just another day, but not really that important. It's just another commercialize event to me.

It's not really a "holiday" -- it's an observance.
But, yeah, it's pretty weak and I wouldn't mind seeing it go away. Same with Mother's Day, Father's Day, Secretary's Day, and Boss's Day.

It never was a national holiday.
it was a time of celebration, like St. Pat's Day or Flag day or Cinco de Mayo

Until St.Patrick's becomes not a holiday, I don't think we can discuss this. It is safe for now.
