In a free society, can the government legitimately argue that they have the power to protect people from harming themselves, such as with drugs, suicide, prostitution, ect, as long as they are not harming others(directly anyway)?

By harming others, i mean direct physical harm.

Drugs- it is a fact that drug users are more likely to commit a crime while under the influence... drugs generate violence.

Suicide- Nothing within our legal traditions or historical practices supports a right to die. The state has a compelling interest in preserving human life in preventing suicide in any form. In committing suicide one is not only harming them selves but also their family and friends. Perhaps they are not PHYSICALLY harmed but definitely emotionally.

Prostitution- Let me just give you three letters and I am sure you can figure it out on your own: STDs. Not only are they infecting themselves but their "clients" as well...
