The Philippines had been under the Spanish regime for 300 years. Dont be surprise if alot of our culture came from them.
The first and foremost is Catholic. UST or the University of Santo Tomas is the very first Catholic University in the Philippines. It was under Spanish priests before. It was in Cebu where Magellan landed. There you will see the old churches too.
The family names of Filipinos are mostly Spanish. Cruz, de Leon, Soriano, Garcia etc.
There is one tradition we inherited & that is the manana habit. We keep on postponing everything that we are always late. Filipino time means when you have an appointment for 1 pm, your friend will come at around 1:30 or 2pm. However, we were also under the American regime for some time, some Filipinos come American time. If you say 1pm, they come even before 1 pm.
Intramuros is a place here in Manila which up to the present will tell you that it was under the Spanish regime. Here old churches such as San Agustin, Manila Cathedral. Restaurants looks Hispanic too. Sometimes you will see calesa or the horse driven carriage.

Prior to the Macapagal administration, the Philippines was considered a Latin American country in the United Nations. The Philippines was then part of the Latin group rather than the Asian group. Also, during the apartheid days of South Africa, Filipinos were considered whites. That's why Filipinos do not get the same bad treatment as the blacks and colored people. In a study, some 4% of Filipinos are Spanish. That is the highest concentration of any European race in Asia. There are also those who have distant Spanish ancestry that have been unaaccounted for. Usually, these people still retain traces of Spanish blood in their physical attributes. More so, some 3,180,000 Filipinos are Spanish speakers according to the Spanish Embassy in Manila.

Yes, we do get mistaken for South American Hispanics. I think Filipinos are the Hispanics of Asia. We do have the Spanish influence in our culture due to centuries being one of their colonies. Some Hispanics start talking to me in Spanish and I just smile and say I'm sorry I can't understand Spanish.

Yes. I am Hispanic and people at times ask me if I am Filipino or Asian mix. I do know that the part of Mexico from where my Grandmother is, many years ago (100-200years) Filipinos arrived by boat. Their is a Filipino landmark there. Maybe I am part. The area is in the state of Jalisco, Mex. The actual beach is called Bara de Navidad.

Yes, Filipinos are mistaken for Hispanics sometimes. Especially since many of us (not me, though) have Spanish last names. My last name looks Spanish, but it isn't. Though I still get mistaken for Mexican and it doesn't help that I speak Spanish too.

Well, one time, I was mistaken as a Hispanic. People thought I looked Mexican and Asian oriented. My friend is Hispanic but she looks Asian. The Philippines was colonized from the Spanish so we have a lot of Spanish influences. One of my friends is Philipino or Filipino (however you people like to spell it), but she has a Spanish last name, Martinez.

Yes because a lot of our ancestors are Hispanics. The country was a Spain colony for 300+ years from the 1500's.

Yes. The Phillipines were colonized by Spain which explains why many Filipino last names are Spanish.
A girl at Kimkins is Filipina and posted about it.
