Because we are fools to have let these dirty bastards screw us for
so long. They have set up a military police state againist us. We are
in deep trouble.

Well, they are the most truthful answers. They treat us like fools because they think we are. Most of them are egotistical, money hungry, control freaks and will do what ever they think they can get away with to satisfy themselves. It isn't a very complex matter, but the system that they abuse, is.
They have laws and loopholes and powerful friends to keep them where they are, at the expense of the people. It is very difficult for the people to break those defenses and most who try are beaten by the system. We don't have the resources or the will to fight the battle alone. And it is very difficult to get the masses together to fight as one.
That is what politicians count on.
I hope that answer is closer to sufficient.

We are so concerned with our own lives as individuals that we don't take the larger view of what is best for the country. ie, we buy goods made overseas because they cost us less, even though it takes jobs away from Americans. Our attitude seems to be " if it doesn't impact me personally, why should I care?". Politicians have zeroed in on this indifference and pursued their own agendas. In that sense we have let them treat us like fools.

They are the fools...really...have you been watching the stupid ads that make them less credible?
Hey...you getting the same harassing calls like I am? Laura Bush called yesterday and the locals are calling to put down each other with their recordings...every day I get 3-5 calls....can't wait until the elections are over in <6 days....Maybe by the next election we will have a "no-call" list for political campaigning in order!!!! I have caller ID and refuse to pick up the phone....

Then the answer must be "because we are."
Politicians only do what is necessary to get what they want. In the United States, that means getting elected. People generally hate complicated things. They like simple and clear answer to all of their problems--things they can understand. What's wrong here is that simple and easy are never the right solution to anything, but it sounds good to our ears. When we are pleased, we will vote!

Well its true. The majority of Americans do not demand answers or accountability from their politicians, they want platitudes and to feel better. They want to be able to sleep at night without feeling guilty.

They treat us like fools, because they are fools, and they dont want anyone to figure that out, so they pretend that we are the fools.

Just before you vote the next time, take a quick look in the mirror and ask yourself whom you should truly vote for for the betterment of the country. As you are looking in the mirror, truthfully answer yourself and do it.

Because we keep voting (or abstaining) like fools.
By the way...if '...they can' and '...we let them' aren't precisely correct answers why don't you tell us something better?
How about changeing Congressmen and Senator pay and benefits to the same as us who elect them. One term for either should demonstrate major reform.

Because market research and social studies have proven it works. And I can't refrain from saying that it is indeed because we let them... or more appropriately because some people do not choose to see through them.
