I have written a play and I am directing it at my small town community theater. There is a sidewalk scene in the play but we're not sure how to portray it. Two characters are suppose to walk down the sidewalk and greet each other and talk for awhile. It is supposed to be a small town...Any suggestions would be a great help! We don't have a lot of money for props and we have limited stage space. The performance is next Saturday! We need help!!!! What do you recommend?

I don't think you need a set. In fact, it could become distracting. An audience will be interested in what they are hearing and not what they are seeing, why upstage yourselves with unnecessary props. Simple lighting, maybe a few sound effects, cars etc is enough, believe me. let the audience do the work. If the acting is good, the audience will believe wherever you are

Can you bring down a (or paint a back drop) of street lamps. Have background noise of cars going past. if you have a little raised plat form that will also work as the ground is where the cars go past and the platform is the sidewalk - painted gray witht the sides black to represent the burm. On the back drop you could also paint mail boxes

The set designer for the play should know how to create a sidewalk scene. Ask him or her.

at my school we had a street looking backdrop. We also put up a little bench and made a street light that we set by the bench. It looked pretty good.
