I'm planning on adopting a kitten. They said the 35 dollars was tax deductible. What does that mean? Please don't give me an obvious answer because I'd really like to know!

Thanks

It's not deductible. If they're a 501c(3) corporation (recognized as a charitable organization by the IRS) and you just gave them a $35 donation without getting a kitten, that could be deductible if you itemize. But since you're getting something for your money, it's not a donation, it's a fee, no matter what they call it, so not deductible.

Sorry its not deductible. Adoption fees for animals are not deductible. i adopted a basset hound a few months ago while schooling for taxes and this question came up. Look at www.irs.gov
Charitable contributions are only for example you went to help at hurricane site to rescue animals. I dont complain about it because I got a great animal out of the 175 I paid.
