so i just turned 12 a month ago and on sunday i got a stomach ache and back ache, cravings, mood swings, difficulty concentrating, and this out of control feeling. and today, wednesday, they've started to go away. so now i just have mood swings and difficulty concentrating. i've been developing breasts and pubic hair for a few years, and have had a little discharge. do you think ill get my period? i asked my mom, and she said she didn't get hers until she was 13. will i get my first period? how far away is it?

There's a good chance you'll get it soon, but try not to get to freaked out about it. Those signs, like back pains (which I get really bad during mine), all seem pretty much like period ones. I don't think difficulty concentrating and an out of control feeling are a part of that though, it was probably because you were stressed out about it.
Make sure you get some pads, you can get tampons if you want to but from personal experience I suggest you wait until you're older, but if you want to use them make sure you buy the smallest size, Juniors, or you're going to have bad vagina pain when you insert it.
Make sure to change often and take showers! :)
If you get it congratulations!
P.S. I recommend midol for pains!

You're definitely gearing up for it. My daughter's doctor gave her a pretty good estimate around a year ago that it would be at least a year (she was 12 1/2 then, still hasn't got it yet). The doctor might be the best person to estimate, they learn a lot in med school about the "stages of puberty."

You can start anywhere from age 9 to 16 and from your symptoms, you could very well be starting. The most average age to start is 12. Every girl is different when they start. I am one of the few that started very young; I started at 9 yrs of age.
Go to the source links I provide, it will tell you everything you want to know about menstruation. The third link I provide is for a book about it; it looks like it would very informative and helpful.

There is no telling exactly how far away it is. My mom got her period when she was 12 I got mine at 11 and my little sister got her's at 13. Genetics plays a part but don't necessarly determine everything. (Your dad contributed 50% of your DNA too, your not going to ask him when he got his first period)
From the sounds of it your not very far away. Don't rush it because once it comes you'll wish it never came.

You will probably be getting your period quite soon. I started having mine only a week after turning 12.

although you wont be able to know the exact day you will get it, i think it will be less than a year.
do you feel comfortable talking to your mom, sister, or friend about this? because you will want to be ready for it:
i wish i had bought a pad or a tampon, but when i first got it i just piled toilet paper against my underwear and hoped for the best!
(you can also get a pad from the school nurse)

sounds like it's coming. The slew of symptoms maybe your body getting ready, and maybe next month you'll feel the symptoms again. . .or maybe this month you ovulated and next month you'll bleed. Hard to say, but I'd say it's definitly not to far away! Wear lightday pads to protect your underwear when it first comes. It will probably be brown when it first comes.
