There were of course the Ottoman Turks, who put together the Ottoman Empire, and today are confined to modern Turkey.
The Turkish languages are a huge group of related languages sprawled across Central and East Asia, as well as Turkey.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkic_languages
An interesting fact is that when one studies the Central Asian Turkic languages, for many of them an Iranian substratum is found; not all of these peoples are really "Turkish" in a geneological sense, but rather underwent language replacement by Turkic-speaking conquerors. Modern Turkish (spoken in Turkey) has undergone many changes, many of them lead by its academy; it is today perhaps the most 'regular' of all languages, with only one single irregular verb (that being 'to be').
The Turks of Turkey tend to see themselves as the leader of the Turkic-speaking nations and are attempting to put together a weaker version of something resembling the British Commonwealth.

The turks are the race that now reside in turkey, remember that a large amount of turkeys population are inn the middle east and a lot of them are muslims. The Turks used to have an empire called the turkish empire, but that was taken over by the ottoman empire about 500 years ago. The ottoman empire was one of the longest lasting empires but collapsed in the early 20th century about the time of world war I.
There is some speculation that members of the same race colonised the area that is now turkmekistan or something like that, but it is mostly name similarities.
