We went shopping at Zales, and I picked out the one I wanted, it was $14,000. I turned away for a few minutes still browsing and a few weeks later, he gave me a ring... sweet, huh... but the metal in some places looks tarnished, which i think he may have done to fake people out cause $14,000 is a freakin lot of money for a ring, even I know that..... so the ring has one BIG stone in the middle two smaller on each side of the big one, and yet two smaller still ,,so two small two medium and one big one... he told me tho that a diamond doesn't sparkle in rainbow colors... but my bro said it looks real and he bought his wife a diamond ring. i have gotten lots of mixed opinions about it, and people actually say it seems real, im dying to know the truth!

Hold it to your mouth and breathe on it like you're trying to steam it up. If it doesn't steam, it's real. If it holds the steam...it's not.
The best way though, is to take it to a real jeweler. Just walk in and ask them to look at it and tell you. You won't be charged because you're not trying to have it appraised...you just want to know if it's real or not.
Even if it isn't real...just keep in mind that he got the ring for you because he was trying to make you happy. Not everyone can afford a ring that expensive...but it sounds his heart was in the right place whether the stone is real or not.

To test the stone, see if you can scratch it with wet/dry sandpaper. If you can, it is not a diamond. If you can't, at least the surface is real (sometimes a layer of real stone will be applied over top of a spinel or other stone). Keep in mind that a lot of commercial jewelers use inferior stones, so you may have a high carat weight, but it's a crappy looking stone. As for the metal--um, gold doesn't tarnish. The only thing I've ever seen turn gold a tarnishy color is firescale from heating the metal. There are also patinas that can color metal, but if the spots are only in certain places, that's probably not it.

Take it to another jeweler and you can have it appraised, they will let you know if it is real or not. I would take the ring back to Zales and let them know that you are not satisfied with the ring, it is a good jewelry store, they should make it right for you.At 14,000 it should not look tarnished, I would have it checked out.

I doubt your boyfriend "tarnished" the ring on purpose to fake people out. If you want to know if it is real, take it to a jeweler and have then look at it, then you will know.
If it is fake. DO NOT tell your boyfriend you know,....especially if you love him. It appears he loves you, and wants to marry you.
Be happy about that, a diamond a good marriage does not make!

Ok, I don't know about you not wanting to take it into the jeweler but if I were you and I really wanted to know. I would go to zales by myself and ask them to do the complimentary cleaning on my ring. After they do it, I would say, I was wondering if you noticed anything wrong with my ring? If no, then ask how to tell if it's real? If yes, ask straight up, is this real? My boyfriend said it was but I see a little tarnish. I just want to make sure if it is real I can exchange it for an untarnished one. Once you find out for sure, if it's NOT real, I would call him out on lying to you. If it is real, then you can hold your head high and be proud. Good Luck.

Get a jewelers glass and look for flaws in the stone. if it is real it will have flaws like cracks in the diamond. most zirconium diamonds have no flaws. but really only a expert will know.

I had a friend that works at a jewelers and she too said that a good way to tell is the color. If it is an actual diamond it will sparkle white only, if it's CZ, then it will sparkle different colors!
Sounds like a beautiful ring! You must be very loved!

Actually, if you tilt the stone in the light and you see pieces of metal INSIDE the diamond, then you know it's fake.
We learned about rocks and how scientists try to speed up the process of diamonds but metals get trapped inside.
