The film is based on the novel An American Haunting, by Brent Monahan.
The events in the novel are based on supposedly true events from the legend of The Bell Witch that have been validated by the State of Tennessee and President Andrew Jackson as the only case in United States history where a spirit or entity caused the death of a man.[citation needed]
The film switches from the 19th Century to the 21st Century and features a side story about a recently divorced mother whose daughter is going through something like the same experience as Betsy Bell.

I haven't seen the movie, but it's supposedly based on the 1800's legend of the Bell Witch, which is considered a true haunting ( or more likely, a poltergeist infestation). The Bell Witch story I have read about many times.

Saw it, it was pretty good, but I kinda figured somethin strange was up from the very beginning, if you haven't seen it I'll give you a hint but that's it: it mostly centers primarily around the father and daughter, see if you can spot it.
and yes it is based around a true story, The Bell Witch is also said to have challenged Andrew Jackson before the Civil War as he passed through the area when he attempted to see for himself the nature of the "disturbances". the spirit reportedly locked the wheels of the wagon or carriage that carried him and his entourage until he acknowledged the existance of the witch.
After which the group was allowed to approach the property, and one of his group claiming to be a "witch tamer" was hit with violent seizures that caused him to scream and contort his body prompting Jackson to quote later that he'd "rather fight the entire British Army than to deal with the Bell Witch." and they were reported to have left the property by noon the following day.
most movies like that're often based around some fact, but it's hard to discern the fact from what was made up.
It's also said to have attacked or verbally assaulted friends and visitors as well as (and especially) the family, in one instance causing Betsy, the daughter to call off the engagement to a local boy named Joshua Gardner, but ironicly not the girl's schoolteacher Richard Powell.
to this day it said that voices can be heard, and children playing in and around the property. and it's also been said that you can"summon" the witch by looking in a mirror at midnight, and saying the phrase "I don't believe in the old Bell Witch" three times, those who have are said to have awakened in the morning with fingernail scratches on their cheeks. it's also said to have predicted the Civil War, Both World Wars and the Great Depression to John Bell Jr.

Never saw it. Based on a true story could mean anything - I highly doubt it.

you know you could watch every movie almost free if you have premium channels i.e. HBO, SHO, MAX.
Just basically wait 6-8 months and every movie will be on there.
