The reaction of Republicans has been just plain funny, but the comments (directed at the Bush admin) were only mildly amusing.

I believe Ken Mehlman, RNC Chairman, put it best . Here's a quote from him:

Monday, failed Presidential candidate John Kerry brazenly insulted the brave American men and women serving in our military. At a campaign stop for Democrats in California, Kerry told students that "you know education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't you get stuck in Iraq."

In Kerry's cocoon of privilege, those who serve in our military are failures who never did their homework or "made an effort to be smart."

It was a horrible thing to say about the men and women who are fighting for our freedom. Most people join the service as a way to pay for a college education. I think his apology was lacking.

Just a side not for the response above me:
I'm a Dem. and I'm not changing parties because one idiot in it made a mistake. I didn't stop supporting our troops when a few went off the straight and narrow and did some questionable things. That would just be stupid.

Find it hard to believe he said this because I think he wants to run for president again and this will come back to hurt him. If he does run for president he should forget about us vets voting for him and since there are thousands of us he really messed up big time.

They were not funny, the man is a disgrace. And his comments were NOT meant for Bush. It was plain as day, he was referring to the troops.

What's funny is how you think repeating Bush's lie about Kerry's remarks will somehow make it true.

Keep dreaming Bushbot. You guys are going down in flames. But I think you can at least re-arrange a few deck chairs on the SS Hindenberg before it spikes itself.

As a paralyzed Vietnam Vet I will never forget John Kerry's traitorous remarks made years ago calling myself and my Brothers-in Arms all manner of names from "Baby-Killers" to "cowards" upon our return and now, our brave brothers and sisters are "stupid"?

I want to state that, 'Mr. John Kerry is not only a man of questionable honor but he should apologize for making statements that not only insult every brave young man and woman Serving but give yet again, "Aid and Comfort to the enemy.

We will now do everything humanly possible to mobilize the Conservative Base not necessarily to Vote to support current policy and Incumbents but to vote "against the Democrats" and the Nancy Pelosi San Francisco Values that party holds to!

This was the best thing he could have done to energize our base!

Now, how will the Far Left Wong ACLU Adoring Liberal Dems explain away this one...watch for the standard "disclaimers" mostly used for Dr Howard Dean and Nancy Pelosi "Foot-In-Mouth attacks...i.e.:

"He was mis-quoted" or maybe, "His statement was taken out of context" or maybe he meant it?

1) He wasn't laughing when he said it.
2) nobody in the audience laughed when they heard it.
3) I didn't laugh when I heard it.

Therefore, it is not just plain funny. I guess it must be "or what". Now we have to decide what the meaning of "or what" is.

Considering his comment was about idiot-boy and had nothing to do with the troops, it would be funny if the Bush spin whores (Rove & Hughes) hadn't twisted it all to hell.

It was a stupid thing to say, so I don't think it was funny. Kerry claimed that he meant to say if you don't study hard, you create a situation like Iraq- a dis at Bush.

I am sceptical, but am willing to give him a pass seeing as he is after all a decorated veteran (which is more than I can say for Pres. Bush or VP Cheney).

His comment was taken out of context. His comment was directed at Bush. It is true, we send our young and less educated to fight our wars. Historically it is true and there are statistics to back that up. Rarely do you see a Harvard grad in the trenches of war.
