In my city the parents walk around with the kids and the police stations offer free scanning and checking of the candy for the entire night of Halloween.

As far as I'm concerned, I go with my children all the way to the doors of the houses, we only trick or treat at the houses of folks we know, & my kids know not to eat any of the candy until I've had a chance to check it over first. One of the advantages of living in a small neighborhood - we know almost everybody & they ALL know my children! I've taught them about talking to strangers - they know the difference & since I go with them that would prevent anything untoward from occurring.

So then let me ask you what your suggestion is.......should we not celebrate the holiday now? That can't be it.

I think parents need to emphasize a lot of awareness, which they have been doing well but also freedom. But be careful! Overemphasizing on awareness will turn thier children into gorophobic cavemen and overemphasizing on freedom will probably cause them to become lawless and heathenistic failures in life......

Balance is key. Good question...

i live in Daytona Beach Florida and they just started doing something new this year. All sexual predators are not allowed to have their porch light on on Halloween. That way no one will go to their door. The police have lists of all of them and drive by their house to see if their light is on. If it is, they are busted. They showed the police on the news doing this and caught some of them with their lights on. I think it is a great idea!!!

Around here on Halloween parents go with their kids and only visit neighbors on the street or the adjacent streets. They don't let their greed for candy outdo their common sense.

well most of the time parents go with the kids.. and i was always taught to check the candy wrappers to make sure they were unopened, no holes.. stuff like that. but if it's in a small community or neighborhood they might know the people there.

That is the problem with our education system, they only teach awareness about strangers, why don't they teach awareness about your uncle touching you or your friendly next door neighbour sexually abusing you. Majority of cases of sexual abuse are with someone the kid knows and trusts.
