I cannot find the page I read it on. Doesn't it mean something about rebirth?

This might help you find it. Go to Amazon.com and find the book. Click on the SEARCH INSIDE THIS BOOK link (under the picture of the book cover). Put in your keyword (red). It brings up all the pages where red is mentioned. You only see a sentence or two for each, so hopefully it will trigger your memory when you see the right sentence.

Why are you looking in Memoirs of a Geisha for the answer? I think you need to rethink your sources. The color red is a symbol of childhood. Maiko (apprentice geisha) have red collars, because they are young and kawaii (cute).

I can't remember specifics, there was a description of a Geisha's hairdo, maybe this is what you are looking for.
