Your best bet is run down to the nearest Barnes and Nobles and purchase a book called Writers Market 2007
You can find it here:
http://www.amazon.com/Writers-Market-2007/dp/1582974276
It has all sorts of info on publishing and agents and stuff. They also make books for individual genres of literature, i.e. novels, short stories.
I have looked into this resource for helping get my book published and it holds a wealth of information.
The thing about copyrighting I wouldn't worry about too much. In the book listed above they say not to go into too much detail of copyrighting; instead, just email yourself a copy of the piece you are writing or save it to a disk. The date time stamp that will be saved with it is what is called "The poor man's copyright"
Hope this helps and good luck.

Dear Jiannaj,
I too am searching for a publishing agent and I am sorry to say that I don't know where to start from there. However, my first item of advice for you, if you haven't done this already, is to get your work copyrighted. There are a lot of scammers out there who are trying to steal your money and your ideas and its good to have the law at your back. Secondly, try to steer clear of people who want you to pay them first before they do anything. I know its common sense, but I don't want anybody to be cheated. I wish the best of luck to you.

Writer: Moses Place Written: Wilderness Writing Completed: c. 1473 B.C.E. Time Covered: Over a hundred and forty years among 1657 and 1473 B.C.E. ONE of the oldest books of the stimulated Scriptures! A publication that's held within the maximum esteem and that's most often quoted, but one that's little understood through mankind. Why was once this publication written, and what significance does it have for us in these days? The reply is indicated within the that means of Job’s identify: “Object of Hostility.” Yes, this publication takes up 2 fundamental questions: Why do the blameless undergo? Why does God allow wickedness within the earth? We have the list of Job’s discomfort and his exceptional staying power for our attention in answering those questions. It has all been written down, simply as Job asked.—Job 19:23, 24. That the publication of Job is legit and stimulated could also be proved in that the historical Hebrews constantly integrated it of their Bible canon, a truth outstanding in that Job himself was once now not an Israelite. In addition to the references through Ezekiel and James, the publication is quoted through the apostle Paul. (Job five:thirteen; a million Cor. three:19) Powerful evidence of the publication’s notion is given in its strong concord with the proved details of the sciences. How might or not it's recognized that God is “putting the earth upon not anything,” while the ancients had essentially the most terrific notions as to how the earth was once supported? (Job 26:7) One view held in historical occasions was once that the earth was once supported through elephants status on a giant sea turtle. Why does the publication of Job now not mirror such nonsense? Obviously in view that the Creator provided the reality through notion. The many different descriptions of the earth and its wonders and of the wild animals and birds of their normal habitats are so correct that simplest God might be the Author and Inspirer of the publication of Job.

Oh please please get an agent. This is why publishing houses are sooooo restrictive. They get millions of submissions and everyone believes they are a writer, when really, only 1 out of that million is. If you really believe you have the talent and your work is good, the agent will make sure you are published.

80% of all publishers these days require agents.
And I wonder why you chose Publish America; since they have a pretty shoddy record in publishing and author rights.
