Brazilian championship background information.
There are three divisions in the league, the Serie A and Serie B - which have made up of 20 teams each - and the Serie C.
The Serie A runs from 16 April to 3 December. The Serie B from 15 April to 25 November. The Serie C from 16 July to 19 November.

State Championship.
Each of Brazil's 27 states has a competition at the beginning of the year. The most important are the Carioca, in Rio, and the Paulista, in São Paulo. These run from 11 January to 9 April.

Yes, Brazil is a huge country so before the transportations were well developed the teams used to play only the state's championships. Only in 1959 was played the first National Championship, but it was in a "cup format". Only in 1971 was played the first Brazilian championship with "championship format". But the tradition of state's championship still remains although with the years passing people are giving less atention to it.

Brazil doesn't have competitive soccer teams from Universities like the U.S. instead they have Sports Club (like YMCA) where also all types of sports are played competitive but the main sport in each club is Soccer. Because there are several of this clubs in each state each year there is a state tournament (alot like high schools have state tournaments). The winner of these state tournaments is theoratically considered the best team from the state.
