I think it's because of a lack of understanding or knowledge of something that is different to the ways we were taught growing up. Ignorance about the unknown can cause fear which seems to make people lash out.

I'm atheist, but I fully support other people's rights when it comes to having their own beliefs. That's completely fine with me if others want to believe in God. But I'll shoot back if being an atheist isn't acceptable to them--and it rarely is. I'll pick a fight with any righteous SOB who uses their religion to justify discrimination (ask any member of the gay community who attacks them the most).

I fully entertain that I may be wrong: There just might be a God. But I really don't think He'd be impressed what we do in "honor" of Him. Centuries of dead people, all because no one can seem to agree to disagree about religion. It's sickening. Just plain sickening. Every time I hear "God bless America" while we're rolling troops into a foreign country and mowing down the natives, I'm reminded why intelligent life from other planets won't visit us. War, in the name of a God of Love. Pathetic.

But to practice your own religion... there's nothing wrong with that. I realize that everybody needs to form their own philosophy of life; we can't just live in the beat of the moment as other animals do. I applaud those who--after actually thinking about it for themselves--decided that there is a God, and furthermore decide to worship Him. However, there's too many amoung us who don't know Thing One about their adopted system of beliefs. I once ran into a group of Christian protesters who were rallying against the removal of the Ten Commandments in public places. Very few--VERY FEW--could tell me what those Ten Commandments are. Since they're only the rules that their God expects them to live by, I had to laugh before leaving the area: There was no intelligent debate to be had there that day.

Once, as a child, we had guests over, and I was misbehaving. My father explained to one of the guests that "some people are just too stupid to be polite." He was right! Now, I guess I'll have to re-use his words to describe this scenereo.

Ok, I think what it is is people freak out sometimes. We forget that we are all just people. We are the same species. People go over the top with trying to convert you into their religion because they are blinded by their faith, and are not aware that what they are doing is wrong. All you can do is look them in the eye and tell them where you are coming from, and be polite about it, and respect their stance if they have one. Just respect them regardless of what religion they are. Good brotherly love, respect, and understanding conquers all. We are all human beings and we should treat each other as so.

It could be fear, laziness, ignorance, intolerance... many things. I feel blessed that I have an open mind and a big heart, and I respect everyone and their beliefs. I many not AGREE with everyone, but I accept the fact that they think differently than I do. More people need to think this way.

There is a personality trait called "opennes". It correlates strongly with such quality as "religiosity," and "authoriativeness." Although, I believe it has to do with the way in which people develop and organize their mental constructs, (mental structures that represent concepts). Due to perhaps defense mechanism (because they have low ambiguity tolerance or the way people are raised) they organize these thoughts (such as religious, political or social ideas) into rigid (due to their cognative styles) and, (especially in the cases of extremists) core constructs. Meaning, the construct (say for example religious beliefs) is related to many other constructs (such as family). When the outside world conflicts with their construct, they feel discomfort.

We are all connected and have more similarities than differences. But we focus so much on the things that make us different from one another that we forget that we are all human being looking for some sort of positive connection in this experience we call life.

The answer is simple, just like when you where a child there was that kid who had to pick on some one to make them self's feel better about them self's. It's just like that, but It's not that there insecure about them self's it's that they are afraid of what they don't know and feel that by putting some one or something down that they are more secure. The fact is that People are afraid of what they don't know and refuse to broaden there horizons, some people just can't eat a piece of humble pie. Now I don't want to belittle any one but I do wish people would educate them self's before saying or doing something stupid just because they don't know.
