Gently distract yourself from the original point of sadness. "Feeding" the emotion by continuing to dwell on the emotion or on thoughts and memories that encourage the feeling of the emotion will most definitely make you continue to have the emotion.
Use some opposite to emotion action-- watch a movie you find hysterically funny, or read about politics in the paper to make you angry ( at least that makes ME angry).
