Yep and this is why:
What is defragmenting and why should I do it?
Fragmentation is caused when an operating system breaks a file into pieces because there is not enough space on the storage device where the file was originally saved.
One example of this would be where a file was originally saved, then modified causing the file to be larger in physical space than first anticipated, the operating system will then break the file into 2 or more pieces and store them in different parts of the storage area.
The system would then keep a record of where the different parts of the file are stored, this is achieved through the use of a File Allocation Table (FAT) or similar file system such as NTFS.
Then, when the operating system requires the file again, it will query the file system (FAT/NTFS/or other) to find out where the different parts of the file are located on the partition (drive).
Defragmentation is the term given to the process of scanning the file system and rejoining the split files back into consecutive pieces.
The process of defragmenting can be time consuming, but it is one of the easiest ways to increase the performance of your PC, the frequency of which a PC should be defragmented will directly depend on the amount of usage.

1. How fast your computer is depends on your hardware and software.
2. You could install more ram if you do not have enough.
3. For the software part, remove the history and junk files from you computer using ace utilities (acelogix.com) or ccleaner if you want something for free. Then uninstall unwanted programs and go through your program files and delete unwanted folders/files, do the same for your documents and settings\yourname and documents and settings\all users. Also check the application data and local settings folders under documents and settings\yourname and documents and settings\all users. These folders are hidden so you have to type documents and settings\all users\application data, for example in the address bar.
4. After you have done this, then yes you should defragment your hard drive.
5. Another reason for slow computers is a bloated or fragmented registry. To rectify this problem, use regseeker (http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm ) to clean your registry, furthermore remove unwanted keys via the installed applications -> software settings under regseeker or use regedit and edit the HKLM\Software and HKCU\Software. After which use ntregopt to defragment your registry (http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/).
6. Scan for and remove viruses and spyware from you computer and update Windows.
7. Oh yeah, and if you really really need to (or you have the free time), reinstall windows, that helps!
8. If you need any help with the above, just post and I will try to help; I hope this helps!

Hi there
you need to defrag your system every couple of months if you use it all the time cos it puts the files/ programs back together into blocks in your hard drive therefore making it easier for your computer to find and open for you.
It will make it load a little faster but if you don't defrag ever then your computer will come to a grinding halt and you wont be able to use it at all
Hope this helps

short answer yes!
Your disk stores information but over time that information gets scattered everywhere. This can cause your hard disk to slow down as it takes the read heads longer to find the information.
I usually defrag my computer once every fortnight or so, just leave it running and watch eastenders!

You should defragment not less than once a month.
If you leave it longer and have lots on the "C" disc your comp
will be slower and take forever to defrag

You should defrag at least once a week. Don't wait until it says you need to do it.

It helps. But it may not be your solution. If you have alot of movie, music, pictures on your hard disk its not going to help that much. You need to partition your hard drive to fix that. Also RAM and Processor are usually your biggest performance booster.
RAM - Cheap Addition
Processor - Not so easy to upgrade.
Good luck.
