I love the instrumental quality of this genre of Metal...But i really cant stand that deep anoying grunting and screaming..I personally think it ruins the song. I Like a mixture of singing and screaming in my music....But not deep grunting and screaming so you cant even understand it. Anyone share my outlook?

I agree with Conie. Just think of the vocals as another instrument rather than a mean to convey lyrics. If they band pulls of guttural vocals well (i.e., not sounding like they're puking into the microphone), then it fits the rest of the music very well and sounds excellent. Also, a good portion of death metal bands have distinguishable (not easily, however) lyrics if you listen closely. Death, Vader, and Kataklysm come to mind. Think about it this way: would you want to listen to Nile with Roy Khan (Kamelot) as the singer? That would just sound really weird.

Here's some good metal bands with less grunted vocals:

Atheist
Amorphis
Lord Weird Slough Feg
In the Woods...
Isis

I know what you mean. Try listening to some lighter metal, since dark metal, especially, is pretty much defined by the grunting and screaming.

I definitely share your point of view. Why do they think screaming their vocals off is music? Their screaming also stererotype heavy metal. They might as well be saying AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH throughout the whole song because it wouldn't matter. Frankly any band who does scream I wouldn't listen to. I like bands like metallica. James actually uses his vocals.

It takes a certain talent to butcher one's voice like that, but i personally pay more attention to the musicianship of the band as a whole... and pretty soon you're listening to all kinds of music that originally turned you off because of the vocals (carcass is a great example of this) ... or megadeth... or rush (though a completely different genre of music),.... try that swedish band Opeth... i think you'd like.

i used to feel that way. but then i saw the art in growling (as long as the music is good). the words arent always supposed to be understood. its a song not a poem. it has to fit the mood, you know?
