Sami, I have altered jeans that are baggy on the waist in the following way (no elastic). You need to unpick the waistband and belt loops with a stitch-unpicker, right back to the side seams on both sides. Then you need to put in a couple of little darts each side - fold the material at the waistband edge, pin in place then stitch. Try on the jeans - do they seem more fitted at the waist now? Ok. Now you need to re-stitch on the waistband and belt loops. Of course the waistband will be slightly too long now and the button hole will not match where the button is. So you will need to put a new button on as well.

Good luck!

If you are looking to shrink jeans without altering them, the best option is to take a cold bath while wearing them!

The materials in denim will actually shrink to the shape of your body, just be careful you don't stay in too long otherwise you may struggle to get them off! It's how most people in the 60s and 70s got skinny jeans.

you say you don't want to wear a belt but what about an elasticated belt.one like they used to wear on the old nurses uniform called a wasper belt or a snake belt as worn by scouts.you can still buy the snake belt in the shops and wasper belts can be picked up in charity shops.

I personally woul dnot buy elastic!!1 that is for little kid. Where do you live? I can fix them for you. I am in the Chicagoland area. If you are too far just find someone to put them omn you. Put a sagfty pin in and stitch from there.

don't add elastic - it will make the jeans "poofy" at the waist no matter how they fit you. buy jeans that are the right size, or get a nice belt (if the pants have belt loops, a belt should always be worn, in my opinion).

Buy a new pair of jeans. If they are too big in the waist they will be too big everywhere else as well (like the crotch and the legs).

wearing them in a bath full of cold water = shrinkage, mind you, you could end up getting a cold or worse the flu if you stay in too long
