They were treated as slaves/property. Some good sources if you would like to get deeper into your question would be to get a book containing actual slave narratives. My favorite resource of this type is called I Was Once A Slave & there are two volumes. These contain first hand accounts of their treatment. You should also check out the works of Ian Van Sertima, James Loewen, The Narrative of a Slave by Frederick Douglas, Roots by Alex Haley. Also check out www.pbs.org, there are many resources there on the history of slaves/slavery, with accounts from actual slaves and slavesholders. The thing that you also have to keep in mind is that the majority of African slaves were sold into slavery by other Africans and as a result millions of Africans were packed on ships like sardines and brought to the Caribbean, America..etc to work. Racisim and the horrific treatment of slaves was a means to keep them in slavery and to break their psyche making them therefore submissive..etc All of this is very well documented and I think you will find more information than you need if you take the time to check out the resources named. Also, in addition to finding a plethora of information on the cruel treatment of slaves and Blacks post civil war, you will find many resources documenting the kind treatment by many whites who were Quakers and abolitionists and believed in the moral cause of freedom for all.

If they were slaves - awfully (there are some good resources mentioned above if you want to know more). If they were traders or merchants, they treated them like anybody else.

Geez havent you seen the movie roots? They were treated poorly unfortunently many people think that slavery began in America and that we basically kidnapped all the slave which is not the case. Family members old other black family members into slavery but whatever.
