If its new no.
If its been used yes.
Remember, when recording to a rewriteable it will record slower like 4 or 8X (depding on hardware) vs a 16X (if you have it).

If it is new you do not need to format it (or reformat it). Use DVD-R if you only want to record once and never be able to record over it or take a chance on it being recorded over, use DVD-RW if you want to use the DVD for something else later or want to add something to it later. Depending on the size of the movie, CD-RW is probably not large enough for a movie, you would need to put it on a DVD.
Did that make any sense?
Did I miss anything?

Its no longer which you mandatory to reformat your dvd-rw, it somewhat is using the fact it grew to become into incompatible along with your camcorder interior the 1st place. once you think of of format, you sometimes think of of floppy disk, zip disk or harddrives. In those cases formating might prepare. yet for dvd-rw, you are able to rewrite and write yet no longer regularly made for reformating quite reformatting it to in shape your camcorder.
