Ah! A fellow Vduber! I have a joke with a friend who owns a Volvo - "See you at a million". He thinks he will make it first. Well to answer your question.

I currently have a 1997 Jetta with the 2.0 liter engine and I just turned over to 208,000 miles today. I still get 34 mpg hwy and 31 city. I have had the engine light on since 51000 miles but no issues. No one can figure out what is going on. I also have a 95 Cabrio with 120000 miles.

Make sure you have or do a valve job every 60,000 miles. Look at the valves to see if they are in good shape and especially not bent. Replace the valve seals and springs at the same time. Check the cylinder and cylinder walls for wear. Also, replace the timing belt and waterpump (the pump will go if wait until the next belt change). If you let the timing belt go, you will damage/bend valves and have more of an expense than you want.

Have the air flow checked at the same time to ensure the catalytic converter isn't plugging up. Replace if concerned.

Keep the fluid levels filled. Replace any seals (valve cover, oil pan, etc) that is starting to leak. My oil pan has not leaked once since I bought it.

I also make sure I replace the oil every 3000 to 3500 miles along with the filter. With how much I drive, that's monthly.

Keep your tires properly inflated for best MPG.

A complete rebuild is the most wonderful thing you can do to a car you love. You have the confidence of knowing that you are the only one who has used that engine and that it hasn't been abused. Once the engine is rebuilt i would give it the complete Prolong Engine treatment. Man that stuff Really Works! From there use fully synthetic Mobil1 motor oil and change your oil and filter every 3000 miles. I change mine at 2500 cause I love my Intrepid and my Passat.

i own a repair shop, and i know of one weakness in them ,and i have repaired a few for this,,after about a 120 thousand miles the oil pan needs to be took off and cleaned out real good on it,it gets a build up ,of old sludge ,and makes the oil pressure fall on them if you,ll clean it out and and use good oil in it ,id say you probably can drive it forever,as far as everything else you seem to have the right idea of what to do for it, those are really good little cars, and i think if taken care of it will last a good long time for you,, good luck with it,i hope this helps some.

I don't know of any weaknesses except the lack of comfort. The exhaust system doesnt last that long, I always use Kendell synthetic oil 10w30. If you are a young man I doubt if it will last you forever unles you store it in a dry place and not run it a lot.
