clean them with a toothbrush and tooth paste just like you do for your teeth. and sadly, from what i hear, if you dont want crooked teeth, you have to wear it at night forever. ahhh.

My retainers are clear plastic that were made off of a mold of my teeth after they had been straightened. They fit perfectly over my teeth and are also used for the whitening gel you can get from the dentist. They are not made to move my teeth anymore but to keep my teeth from moving back. Teeth have memory and will move back. I lost my retainers about 5 yrs. ago and got these as replacements. It took 2wks from the time my mold was taken till I got the retainers and I waited another couple before using them. They were tight because my teeth had already started to move. I also left them at home over vacation once and the same thing happended. They fit perfectly as long as I continue to wear them at night. If I don't for to long they are tight and my teeth hurt as the retainers pressure the teeth back to the right position. If left out for too long I am certain I would not be able to get the retainers on over my teeth. These are the best retainers I have had. Ask for the ones that you can use the whitening gel with. They are almost like the invisa line braces. Good luck

The amount of time you wear a retainer varies from person to person. Your orthodontist should give you the details on that. There are a couple ways that I know of to clean it. For a quick clean, just take your toothbrush and brush the retainer under the running water. You can also scrub it with alcohol.
The first paragraph of this site talks about how long to wear retainers: http://www.orthodontics.org/retainer.htm

i usually put it in a glass of baking soda and water and that works pretty well if you leave it in there for a while, but you should ask your dentist about it too.
i dont know how long people usually wear retainers though. if its the kind that you get when you get your braces off then usually your supposed to wear those at night for the rest of your teenage life so your teeth dont shift back

a toothbrush and some listerine work, you will need to wear your retainer forever actually, but not all the time just to bed once or twice a week. teeth have memory if you don't wear it on occaision your teeth will eventually move back the way they were.

Get Denture cleaners, and stick the tablets in some water and put your retainer in there as if they were dentures.
