What they are and aren't allowed to do (i.e., they can't diagnose, they can take BP, etc.)? Thanks!

Nurses have a scope of practice defined by each state. I am a registered nurse from Missouri, so I left you a link from my state. These are very similar in each state, however.

Please note, it states that we can have a "nursing diagnosis"...which is not a medical diagnosis of a disease. An example of a nursing diagnosis is the following:

Alteration in mobility related to Multiple Sclerosis. Multiple Sclerosis is the disease the doctor diagnosed the patient with, the nurse is stating her observation on how the patient is affected.

Hope it helps.

Depends on your state as to what they can and can't do. Try your State Board of Nursing. Try your state.org web site. Its called Scope of practice and tells you what nurses can and can't do. I can't diagnose anything that is for MD's only. If you are wondering because you may want to become a nurse you might try a The nursing dept at a local college.

Check into the Nurse Practice Act for the state you are interested in. It's pretty specific for what a nurse can do. Specify RN or LPN act when you do your search. Good luck, and read it carefully, it's full of "legalese".
