Duct tape is used to seal air conditioning duct work. But there is a Duck Tape brand of duct tape and that is probably why everyone just calls it duck tape no matter what brand it is. It's all the same kind of tape anyway.

Keep in mind that it is called DUCT tape and not DUCK tape.. Yes...Duct tape was originally known as duck tape,... It is a strong, fabric-based, multi-purpose adhesive tape, usually silver or black in color, although many other colors, including transparent, are also available. Duct tape is usually 1.88 inches (48 mm) wide.
Yes, it was originally named DUCK tape because it was introduced in the Army and was DEVELOPED at the request of the army for a strong tape that could be used in the elements.. It was called DUCK tape because it could withstand WATER as ducks can... then;
Following the war, housing in the United States boomed, and many new homes featured forced-air heating and air-conditioning units that relied on duct work to distribute warmth and coolness. Johnson and Johnson's strong military tape made the perfect material for binding and repairing the duct work. By changing the color of the tape's rubberized top coat from Army green to sheet metal gray, "duct" tape was born

The name of the original brand of the tape was "Duck". The technical name of the tape though is "Duct Tape". Its for sealing up leaks in ventilation shafts.
