If a human being dies instantly, for example, they will never have known their last meal really was the last one, or that the last time they made love would really be the last time. So, if every time we do something and we do it to the best of our ability, would that be the only response we can make in the face of death?

And, are there any last things which would be GOOD to have as last things, like paying income taxes?

Well I probably think this way more than most, 'cos my dad (when he was alive) always used to do something like get a new carpet and say 'that'll see me out' or 'we won't have to do that again' or buy a suit 'that'll see me out' !!!

We were always joking with him when he'd say stuff like that, 'cos he did it right from when we were young. But now he HAS gone and those last things DID see him out.

It is not weird at all to question our next step into the afterlife. Just realize there is a first and last for everything.

“would that be the only response we can make in the face of death?”

No, there are other responses humans can make in the face of death. Like accepting death and moving on, instead of worrying what your last thing in life is all about.

Living our lives to the best is good. But, if you live your life to the best just because your worried that it maybe your last thing you will ever do will not be fun at all because your worried about death.

Just kick back and do what you want to the best you feel is right. Don’t worry about the last step in life. It will come in good time

But if you did know, would it make you a better person, or would it make you give all hope? If you knew your last moment was two months away, how would you conduct yourself after finding out? So many terminal illness victims prove themselves to be true heroes by how they face and act each day, while people who aren't facing such situations want us to believe they are the victims or they are the heroes by their actions or words, when our admiration should be of those who deserve it. And overall, this is where religion comes in, or faith, it makes and end into a transition.

There is also a first time for everything you do. Even if you think you've done it before, you may have been doing it wrong. So there would be a first time of doing it right. This may be the last answer I ever give, so I'll try to do it right. If --- it is the last answer... would I ever know it?

Its the fear of loosing your conciousness..your identity...with no control...by complete surprise.

It is the dual face of TAO..(chinese character of undefined, but).surprise....that both attracts us and makes us fear...but think about it, would life be as exciting, if we knew we had control over the exact moment this or that (when we died for example) would happen? It is through TAO that life gets meaning (the excitment of adventure and surprise), but with that meaning comes the opposite needed for its existance---the fear of doubt and loss of control. A balance, as in everything, is needed to face TAO face to face. Don't worry time about something you have no control, because realize that life is precious, so live it to the best but don't care for what you cannot change. (TAO wisdom)

Yes it is weird, but I was not thinking of it in terms of dieing when I first read your question. I can barely remember the last time my brother and I hung out now hes been in Italy for seven years. I did not know at the time he wasn't coming back.

We're all going to die someday my dear... that's the honest truth.
So, rather than sitting around, waiting for Death to come knocking, live each day, be present in each moment & celebrate life.

I didn't realize that the last time someone asked me to marry him was going to be the LAST time someone asked me to marry them.

Oops. Maybe I should have said yes.

This is an unusual question. I hope you're not a sniper. :) Anyway...every so often, I do think about these things, and then I am more careful in what I'm doing. It is freaky...not my fave topic.
