My husband & I were just having this conversation, as well as having one with my son's babysitter.

People are trying to downplay it for the fear of offending 5% of the population. Plus, there's a lot of places who advertise "safe trick-or-treating" like at churches, malls, etc. Trunk-or-treating is becoming a very big thing at schools & churches, too. I think after people go with their kids to these things (some even happen the weekend before Halloween), they don't worry about doing the actual Halloween things on Halloween.

Sad what some of it has come to, but we also wondered how long it would be before no one goes door-to-door trick-or-treating. Now schools have "fall parties" instead of Halloween - kids can't even dress up for school anymore (reference the 5% comment above).

I hate to see it change like that, but society is making it change.

People are scared of everything these days. Plus I've noticed in my neighborhood people think it doesn't go with their religion. I think its sad. I did have a woman that was about 40 trick or treating at my house. I think their may have been drugs involved though. Sad. Happy post Halloween all!

Simple answer is unsafe neighborhoods, the threat of violence & the worry of some idiot contaminating treats with sharp objects etc. Also consider resposible parents with children who have allergies and so on. There are many reasons. I have one neice who has no interest at all & she is very young. So in this messed up society we live in , learn & watch as our traditions gradually disappear. Sad isn't it.

The myth of tainted treats has been around for many years (even tho there are no police or hosptial records to sustain it). If 25 years ago parents were afraid of this unwarrented myth (when they use to pick up random hitch hikers) how do you think they are today when you will not even pick up your stranded neighbor?

Parents too scared to send their children out. It is sad that it has become this way, but society has let people get away with things too much.

I dunno about you, but killer steps discourage out of shape trick or treaters. I think there's just less kids. But try to drive down the block? They're EVERYWHERE!!!
