Southern Cross is the name of Stephen Stills boat at the time that he wrote the song. The song is telling of the ways that he has searched the oceans of his life and found himself within. He found that there is a larger meaning in this life then just our own boundaries.

The southern cross is also a constellation that sailors use to travel, I always thought this was what the song was about that use. because upon seeing it for thefirst time would be a moving experience.

I think it's about the theraputic effects of sailing, of the feeling of when you're on the ocean you feel like you're instantly part of the history of the sea. When you're part of something so huge all your personal problems seem insignificant. And it can seem like the wind that fills your sails is guided by a larger force out there.

I may have personalized this song too much, but this is what it means to me:

The souhtern cross is only visible on the bottom (sothern hemisphere) of the earth.

It about a man who feels like he's seeing rock bottom. The woman he loves- his soul mate- has left him. he knows that, no matter what, they'll always be tied together because of their daughter "And my love is an anchor tied to you, tied with a silver chain" "What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten" "Lookin' for that woman, girl"

The man knows he needs to move on "You will survive being bested, But somebody fine will come along make me forget about loving you" But he wishes he didn't have to.

to me it means cranking up the volume and ripping the knob off. there are too many songs that can refer to spirituality. because that is where music comes from-the soul. If it moves you, gives you goosebumps, makes you dance. makes you cry makes you twist and shout its all good.(with the exception of anything by Air supply)
Rock n roll has its roots in the blues which in turn has roots in gospel, so like i said its all good. Rock on!

its a love song at its core, but still quite spiritual, every time i listen to it i feel different, sometimes its a call to the greater good, sometimes a pity party. that is the sign of a songwriter that is superb at his craft.
