Well over the half life of a radioactive whatever, that whatever will decay to half the origional amount, and then to half that... and so on
So say the half life of Element X is one year. After a year you will have 1/2 of Element X, and after two years you'll have 1/4 of Element X, and after three years you'll have 1/8 of Element X and it will go on and on like this, halving itself every year

It's the time it takes for something to decompose by 50%.
example: I give you 20 lbs. of an isotope xyz that has a half life of 10 years. In 10 years there is 10 lbs, in 20 years there is 5 lbs, In 30 years there will be 2.5 lbs left; and so on.

The ending amt equals the beginning amt divided by 2n
where n=elapsed time divided by half life or
n=number of half lives
