I had a D&C a few months back, it was my second one in two years. I've been on the Depo Shot for almost 5 years. I didn't have any kind of period until after my last D&C. My gynecologist said that a little bleeding is to be expected but it should stop now that I am back on the Depo Shot. I receive the shot every 10 weeks. Last month I had my period the whole month long. I'm bleeding steady and heavy by times and it makes me feel tired and weak and irritable and I have a lot of cramping in my sides and private areas. Today I saw my gynecologist's nurse for my Depo shot and I told her about it. She told me that I have to take it easy for the next couple of days. My doctor is out of town and won't be back until this Monday.

How common is it for a woman to experience their periods after a D&C? All the women in my family has had D&C's and their periods stopped. Besides anemia, what else can I expect to happen to me? Serious answers only please.

The nurse also told me that if my blood flow becomes overly excessive I am to go to the ER. What would they do for me? The nurse also told me that I had to elevate my feet and not do much including bending or lifting.

Did you not catch that I am on the Depo shot to prevent me from having my periods? I get a shot every 10 weeks. What would the ER do for me if I go since I have such heavy flow? I am still going strong. I just got my shot on the 1st of November. Any gynecologists or nurses out there who could help me?

You shouldn't be bleeding like you are after a D&C, if your doctor is out of town then I would suggest you go to ER for a check up asp, you might have an infection thats all, but don't sit worrying about it and go to the ER to put your mind at ease, good luck.

If the D&C is done properly, bleeding afterwards can last a week or two. One's normal period should resume a month or so afterwards, although it takes a couple of months for it to stabilize. If there is heavy bleeding, that's an indication that some of the material remains lodged in the uterus and causing hemmorhage. If you're anemic take iron supplements, but see the doctor ASAP because this could be serious.
