so the doctors can help a patient who begs them for a painless way to do it, without worrying about being prosecuted...instead of having to send them home to find a different way to do it, like gunshot. just about as quick. about a million times worse. imagine you're the doctor.

Modern medical science can produce miracles and help people live normal active lives when they would have died a century ago.
But, it is also sometimes used just to extend the death. My husband's grandmother died after 18 months in the hospital, and it was horrible to watch. She was in agony, and the docs wouldn't give her morphine because "she might die."
Now, my husband's grandfather is in the hospital, and it's the same thing. Stomach tube surgery, IVs, and he's just not going to get better. I think the best thing would for him to be able to die at home with a little dignity. And if he is in pain, he should get the painkillers -- of course, I don't want them to kill him, but if he should happen to die, wouldn't it be an easier death than forcing him to breathe on machines?
I think people oppose assisted suicide because it's too easy to do it for selfish reasons. People used to leave old folks up on the mountains and let them freeze to death. Maybe our modern society would find giving grandpa a little shot to be an "easy" solution to a painful and costly situation.
It's a really hard question. I think *most* people want what is best for the patient, but most people don't have very much experience with dying people.

People should be able to die as they choose. The arrogance of other people attempting to arbitrate that most fundamental right is just staggering to me. And if somebody is physically incapable of exercizing that right, or wishes to do it with medical support to minimize pain, etc, s/he should be allowed the assistance of a trained, compassionate professional.

I am completely for it when it involves terminally ill people who are suffering. I feel that if mentally they are deemed competent, the should be allowed to make this decision for themselves. I have watched too many family members waste away and suffer from cancer. If they wanted to end their suffering and their condition was terminal, I would accept that.
