I am considering purchasing a laptop aimed at performance gaming, preferably for under $1000. What would be my best choice as far as a brand computer goes?

I agree that you won't find anything that can game for under $1000, let alone game well. If you are playing older games you can probably get away with it, but anything new and you'll be forced to play on low settings with a very bad resolution, if you can even get the game to play at all.

These are the bare minimum graphics cards you should look for to be able to game on ok settings, you won't be able to max everything out, but everything will play well. In order of performance, lowest to highest.
Nvidia GeForce Go6400
ATI Mobility Radeon X600
Nvidia GeForce Go7400
ATI Mobility Radeon X1400
If you want better performance, where you can turn the settings on high, listed lowest to highest
Nvidia GeForce Go6600
ATI Mobility Radeon X700
Nvidia GeForce Go7600
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
Nvidia GeForce Go7700
Nvidia GeForce Go7600GT

and now for the best of the best, monsters, you won't find these in anything that is close to mobile though. These are only in desktop replacement notebooks that need constant power because they are so power hungry.
In order lowest to highest
Nvidia GeForce Go7800
ATI Mobility Radeon X1800
Nvidia GeForce Go7900GS
Nvidia GeForce Go7800GTX
ATI Mobility Radeon X1800XT
Nvidia GeForce Go7900GTX
Nvidia GeForce Go7950GTX
The next gen of mobile graphic is just around the corner though, with the latest direct X 10, and support for everything in vista. You'll just have to wait a few months for these.
A better budget for a mobile gaming system is more around $1500 on the very low end. It's very much worth it to save up, instead of dropping a grand on something that doesn't do what you want it to.

The last answer recommending Mac is funny for two reasons. First, you cannot get a Mac laptop for under $1000. Second, even the $2000 ones are no good for gaming.

Anyway, for performance gaming you will have difficulty finding a desktop for under $1000, a laptop, forget about it. For performance gaming on a laptop you need to be spending at the very least $1500, and probably much more to be quite honest.

I heard dell has two new ones out that are screaming good for gaming. My hubby was looking into buying one but decided on a desktop. I'm not sure of the price though. Go to their website.

no,no,no...
you see there is only one all-in-one gaming machine that can play both windows games and mac games. A macintosh. With their intel prosessors, they can run windows therefroe, double the OS's double the games, double the fun. :-)
