Springfield is the fictional city in which the TV series The Simpsons is set. It is located near Shelbyville and Capitol City in a state whose name is never mentioned until the non-canon episode "Behind the Laughter", where announcer Jim Forbes clearly says "this northern Kentucky family". The evidence is sufficiently contradictory, since Kentucky is landlocked while Springfield clearly has a port and access to the sea. (But if you look at county names in Kentucky, you can find most of the names of the Simpson characters, including Simpson County in southern Kentucky.)

First let me just clarify that two people in this post answered wrong #1. the direct quote was "oh hi ya maude" and #2. Every state in America has a Springfield and it has never been said. We know it's not NY because Homer hates it there, remember his car was impounded there it's not NJ cause Marge was driving and said "go back to Jersey" and also the white michael jackson guy was from Paterson NJ. You can really narrow it down if you go through the episodes. I dont think we will find out until the final show.

They have never said. They never will. It's one of the longest running jokes of the show that we have no idea where Springfield is.
In one episode, Homer and Lisa attempt to point it out to Apu on a map but can't agree on where it is, prompting Apu to say he's so confused, he doesn't even know where he's being kicked out of anymore.

Well, let's see.... it's on the ocean, it has a glacier, it has a jungle, it has mountains, it has a huge canyon, it has a desert, and it has hillbillies. Seems obvious to me. :)
