You can do an alt-PrtScn (hold alt key and press PrtScn key). This saves the current desktop as a Windows Meta File.
Open Microsoft Paint, click in the draw area and press Ctrl-V. This places the meta file in the window. Crop the area that you want, and save the file as a .jpg, in your My Documents file. Right click on the desktop and select Properties. Select the Desktop tab and in Backtround, look for the file you created and choose it as the background. That's it.

if you mean a b/g on your desktop? if you do, you should use paint. you type under paint, save it then go to file, and down to set as background.
