If I have 24 coins in dimes and quarters. THe total value of coins is $3.00. How many coins do I have?

you have to set up two equations....x+y=24 and .10x+.25y=3.00

now you can do to things...one way is to solve the first equation for x or y then x=24-y.... sub this into x in the second equation
.10(24-y)+.25y=3.00
2.4-.1y+.25y=3.00 combine terms
2.4+.15y=3.00
subtract 2.4 from both sides
.15y=.6 divide both sides by .15
y=4 x=20
