I had a soccer game this past sunday and during the game, I made a sharp turn and all of a sudden, my knee started hurting when I straightened it. But, I continued playing. When I got home, I iced my knee and elevated it. After a few hours I noticed that the area below my kneecap was and still is swollen and its still painful to straighten my leg out completely.

Does anyone have any clue as to what happened to my knee, and should I continue playing soccer [I have a game in 2 days.]

You probably twisted your knee to some degree and may have sprained your patella tendon. I will not go into all of the details but basically you may have acute patellar tendonitis now with swelling underneath the knee cap and through the tendon. The swelling compresses when you extend the knee thus causing pain and preventing you from straightening the knee all the way out. If this is not the case, there is a possibility that you may have torn some cartilage in the knee, this is known as a meniscus injury. The cartilage tends to ooze fluid slowly after injury and although your knee may not have swollen immediately when playing the other day, you would have noticed the swelling by the next morning and again the swelling and the cartilage tear would produce pain when you extend the knee. As far as playing soccer in 2 days, you should not. You should put an ice pack on your knee for 15-20 minutes every 4 hours or so and make an appointment to see an orthopedist who will likely refer you to physical therapy for a few weeks ultimately depending upon his diagnosis.

If you love soccer enough to risk another injury then do it. If you don't wanna get hurt again.. dont do it. I have done cheerleading for over 10 years, im in 10th grade. and I get hurt almost every time i cheer. I am in pain 24/7 and i should quit cheering do to the complications i got from injuries but i love cheering so much that i risk further injury

Clipse: knee injury ? well I reccomend that you talk with
soccer coach at once .Because alot of times cartlege or
knee joint might be dislocated . For treatment use ice pack
in case it's swollen again then use an elastic sports bandage to
keep that knee wrapped up as comfortable were needed
take it easy do as the family doctor says

You should not play any more soccer until you have seen your doctor. When you twist your knee, you could damage your ACL, collateral ligaments, or the menisci. Considering you had swelling, the damage is more than just trivial. You will probably need a MRI. Good luck!

You need to take your knee to the Doctor.

Listen to what your knee is telling you.
