you seriously degrade the quality of your music..and since the majory of people are using already illegally downloaded music of questionable quality...i seriously wouldn't reccommend you "convert" the songs files...unless you're "converting" them from the original CD.

mp3 is the best format. Its the smallest file with best quality.

Edit-->Preferences-->Advanced-->Import Using-->
(AAC Encoder, AIFF, Apple Lossless Encoder, mp3 Encoder, WAV Encoder)
I would select AAC Encoder, and see if it works for you.
