yes, thank you to all, but what about meaningful, intelligent conversation, and, of course, sex?

Good question, why would they?!

Different types of love, affection and companionship but still, you shouldn't prefer one to the other overall! That would just be rather odd!

Maybe YOU need human companionship...not EVERY human on this planet does. Besides marriage is NOT the only way to have human companionship. I'm not married yet I have "human companionship" every day of my life. I work, go to school, have friends. That doesn't take marriage. However I do tend to prefer the companionship of animals..because animals are at least basically honest. They are true to their own nature and don't give a damn if you look like Pamela Anderson or the Hallmark character Maxine. They don't care whether you have enough money to buy out Bill Gates, and Donald Trump combined or have 5 cents to your name. They don't desire THINGS to make them happy. Obviously you are still very young and don't understand the many DIFFERENT types of relationships in the world.

Why in the world would someone ask this question when it's obvious you don't have a special connection with animals???? One HAS to have that BOND with animals that the animals can sense!!!!
Doesn't mean people necessarily PREFER a pet to the Spouse for companionship! It's at a different level when you have that love and tenderness! SEE?

From all the answers to your question, it's summed up when everyone is saying that pets love unconditionally, etc.

Adopt a pet today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe they have a better understanding of the animals feelings than that of someone elses or even there own. Animals provide a love and companionship that is easier for some to deal with. your pets dont usually reject you and / or leave you for someone else. they don't ridicule your thoughts, dreams, or desires. Animals provide an unconditional love that most humans are uncapable of providing. Pets need love and nurturing without all the hassle of looking good, dressing right, and they are waiting at the door for you when you get home. they are even glad to see you each and every time. Pets dont take their bad days out on you. need I go on. Yes I have pets and yes I have a significant other.

not everybody has a spouse who shows them the unconditional love that an animal can give.we all need to feel loved ,wanted but sometimes a spouse can forget this need and we end up taking each other for granted. for some people spending their days at work or with friends is enough and then going home to be with their pet is great. If this works for them them don't knock it, as for sexual pleasure , think about it, i am sure they can DIY

Probably the people that prefer their pet over the spouse is because they dont want to work on the relationship. It's a way of coping and keeping distance from intimacy in conversation and life. If they didnt cuddle up to their pet...they'd have to try working on the relationship or get out of it. My personal opinion from personal experience. When my ex's dog died...he wanted to replace it immediately to use as a conduit between us so he didnt have to work on our relationship.
When I wouldnt allow another 165lb great dane beast in the house once again...my ex just worsened on communication. His problem!
Some people just cant handle intimacy. hmmm.

If you had my ex-spouse you would understand perfectly. Sometimes they turn out to be someone you don't even know.

At least animals are loving, loyal and consistent.

Because my cat doesn't lust for other women, doesn't gripe at me when I leave something out of place, doesn't expect me to wait on him hand and foot and doesn't criticize me for ANYTHING!!!!

Cats have more patience, they eat anything I give them without complaint, they love me even when I'm ugly! What man can give me this!?!?!?!?

LOL

From your question I take it that your spouse pays more attention to the pet.....or maybe the pet pays more attention to him.
Anyway....What kind of looser "wouldn't" love a pet?

Because lots of animals are much more loyal and faithful to their master or mistress than a spouse is to their spouse...
