I'd have to go with Joe Montana as far as the "best".

No. The reason is that they changed the passing rules in 1981 to make it easy for QB to pass the ball. That is one reason the 49'ers won the Superbowl that year. That change made made the west offensive difficult to stop. That is Elvis Grbac is rate higher than Johnny Unitas.
Most single season and single game passing record were broken that year. Before 1981 there were only 10 quarterbacks with a rated over 100 for a single season. Now every year a QB there is a QB rate over 100.
So he might be one of the best QB's since 1981, but I believe Dan Marino or Johnny Unitas.

No way. Joe Montana was better since he pretty much invented the last minute come from behind victory, hell he turned it into a science. Johnny Unitas was the best pure passer and the all around toughest guy to play the position. John Elway was probably the best all around quarterback, really the first of the modern prototypical QB (tall, rocket arm, can move/run, smart). I think Tom Brady is better than Manning at this point since he makes way fewer mistakes and wins the games he's supposed to.
And don't tell me Superbowls don't matter...try winning one without a strong quarterback.

At this time in his career no but by the time he is done he may be. The truth is that a QB is measured not only by his own ability but by the way he can make his team and teamates better and because as you stated football is a team sport and at that level the only thing that matters is winning it all . Peyton is a great talent and when it's all said and done he may well be the best ever.

No......he needs to be doing this for a few more years yet, he has some big time names to catch on a lot of fronts, i.e. Joe Montanta, John Elway, Dan Marino, and that's just recent history...and he has to show that he can win a big game. Maybe not a Super Bowl but a big game would be nice. He never did in college, and he hasn't yet in the NFL. I know football is a team game, but in big games, HUGE games, your stars have to make the plays to win. He hasn't, yet. I'm sure he will, I thought last year against Pittsburgh would give him the chance until VanderJerk choked so badly. Check back in say, 10 years and I'm sure he will be mentioned as one of, if not the best to ever play.

As you say, football is a team sport, so with Marvin Harrison catching his passes for years he has 0 superbowl rings. Now compare Steve Young, Joe Montana, John Elway, Tom Brady, Terry Bradshaw, just off the top of my head. Not to mention greats from years ago like Don Meredith, Bart Starr, John Unitas, who we may never have seen but who knew how to deliver the goods in the playoffs. In time Peyton Manning may warrant mention with those quarterbacks (I hope not for my Patriots' sake), but not yet.

Yes I agree...Peyton Manning is probally the best feild genral the league has ever seen. And will probally retire with all kinds of passing records. You make a good point too about super bowls. Trent dilfer won one a few years ago and who even know s where he is now.He even got let go the next season...so its not just about SB's its about consistant performance year in and year out

He is easily the one of the best quarterbacks in the league right now but he isn't the best ever, Joe Montana, John Elway, Dan Marino, Steve Young, and Brett Favre are all better then him to name a few.

It depends on what your definition of "Best" is... If you are judging by championships he has none end of story. if you want to judge by stats then you would have to include every QB in U. of Hawaii and Texas Tech from the last 8 years or Andre Ware or David Klingler from Houston in the late 80s-early 90s. All i have to say is he never has won anything in his life that mattered, neither has his brother... his last name is Manning that's all.

I would say yes, because I personally love him. Look at all he's accomplished, all of the records that got broken by him, it's just amazing.
I'm sure plenty of people disagree, but I just think he is the best quarterback at the moment. Ever? We'll see when he retires.
Plus, he does make some funny commercials ;-) :-P
