IDK about a tornado all i can say is evacuate...but i live in Florida, and hurricanes happend alot,a i expected that to be on the state flag, now on to your question there are two option that my family fowllow incase of a hurricane emergency, we either ride it out by staying the house of going to shelter or evacuate to the nearest unaffected location. When we ride out a storm we maincly have things like canned food, a grill, flashlights, candle, a box of cards, and a generator that is not full of gas(in case of explosion no gas means saftey, keep gas contained somewhere else). Water is the main thing you need over anything else. In addition if a hurricane is over cat3 it is best to evacuate, because you can expect the unexpected, like mini tornadoes within the storm that cause mass damage. Keep as far away from body of water during a hurricane, like the lake in my backyard always fill up, and most often destroys my gates. So that what i can say for hurricane.

The 'cane answers are pretty good. As far as being in a tornado watch area:

1) Buy a weather radio. I have one, and recommend it strongly if someone lives in Tornado Alley.

2) Tune in a nearby AM radio station that's good for weather alerts.

3) If you need to take shelter, make sure you take a cellphone with you. Lots of times, people get trapped, may be seriously injured, and being able to communicate saves lives.

4) Don't assume a tornado warning will be issued before a tornado strikes. They usually are, but not always. If your immediate environment gets really scary by such things as large hail, damaging winds, or lightning strikes occurring many times per second, take shelter. Of course, hearing a loud roaring noise is a very bad sign as well.
