I'm just starting out in the social work field and I'm finding that the jobs that are available right now are only paying $13 - $14/hour. I think that's appalling. How am I supposed to pay back my student loans on that? Is this typical across North America?

Unless you get a hospital job or a nice gov't job, unfortunately yes! And yes, it is appalling. The only thing that could raise your income is if you are able to become a vendor, perhaps with the Dept of Social Services, and then you can charge whatever you want. I know that Dept of Rehab always needs vendors for various things, and whatever your specialty is, perhaps you can make your own career.
