Actually, granite is an intrusive igneous rock, formed by melting of continental crust. It forms in many mountain ranges around the world as the huge stresses and pressures of orogeny (mountain building) squeeze the crust and force it to melt. It can also form in rifting events, when depressurization of the crust due to extension allows it to melt.

You can find granite all over the world...in the Himalayas, Alps (Bergell Granite)...in fact, its pretty common....just search for granites on google scholar and read the locations off the titles of the zillions of papers you'll find! Good luck!

Granite is a metamorphic rock, meaning it has undergone changes due to heat and pressure. It is commonly found around the Appalachians because of the tectonic events that occurred there during the Ordovician(about 470 mya) I seen tons of granite in the Adirondacks; up state New York.
