I mean, if we say you have to make fun of ALL races, your own included, is that an excuse? OR is it the fact that race should NEVER be a punchline?

I don't think it is funny even when you make fun of your own race... racist jokes are just that racist.

You know before I worked with working class people in New Jersey, I NEVER used race as a punchline. I remember one time I came home to NC & said something like 'Rob stuff like a PR' & then my whole group just stopped & stared at me like I had lost my mind. But, since I've come up here in the area, I have made more racist jokes, but I don't believe I'm the 2nd coming of Hitler. I have worked with every person with every continent & a lot of countries (East Eur, Arab, Sub-Sah, China, PR, Honduras etc)
The main thing is that they are just jokes & the people I joke with know they are, b/c they'll make jokes on me. So w/ all the diversity here, it just works, not one group ever gets ganged on, it's all shared amongst each other. That being said though, if someone was uncomfortable we stop immediately, b/c we do not want to offend a bystander/get in trouble.

I think that given the fact that we continue to blend more and more, and interact with many different people from many different racial and ethnic backgrounds it will be more difficult NOT to make 'racist' jokes. We (I'm caucasian) make fun of ourselves and common stereotypes associated with various people of our own race - and we are around people of other races who do the same about themselves. As we develop friendships across all races and ethnicities, it's natural that we will get together and make jokes together about things that we consider funny. There's really is a difference between 'laughing with' someone and 'laughing at' someone. We make jokes about getting older, hair color, size, politics, and many other things.

In order for your stance to work, then there can be no jokes, ever, which have punchlines that target anyone for any reason. Maybe in a perfect world - but I really can't see that ever happening.

I think we should all accept that difference makes us who we are. If we weren't different life would be a big BORE!
